Raising chicks for the first time can be incredibly exciting and rewarding. To get started, you'll need to set up a brooder – a warm, safe, enclosed space where the chicks can grow and thrive, free from drafts or risk of predators (including your indoor pets like cats and dogs!). Set this up BEFORE you actually get chicks so it is the right temperature and ready for them. They will need a heat source like a heat lamp or brooder plate to keep the brooder at the right temperature, ideally around 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit for newborn chicks. It's crucial to monitor the temperature regularly with a thermometer to ensure that it stays within this range. Each week that they age, the brooder temperature can be dropped about 5 degrees until they have enough feathers to move outside (around 6-8 weeks). You will need chick feeders and waterers, and a dish for chick grit. Additionally, stock up on chick starter feed. It has all the nutrients they need to grow healthy and strong. They will be eating chick feed until they are old enough to start laying. Chick grit is a necessary supplement to help them establish a healthy digestive system and can be offered free choice in a small flat dish or lid. Clean water and a clean environment are a must! Choosing a bedding material like pine shavings and changing it frequently (daily ideally) is a must for healthy chicks. With proper care and attention, watching your chicks grow into beautiful chickens is sure to be an amazing experience.
